SENNHEISER MX 686G SPORT Headphones Review

The SENNHEISER MX 686G SPORT are an in-ear style headphone built for more rugged and active situations. If you are someone who works out a lot or is into sports then these may just be the headphones you are looking for.

The SENNHEISER MX 686G SPORT is built with durability and comfort in mind. The hard plastic protects the sensitive parts while the silicon allows for maneuverability and a snug fit. The ear tips are removable and have an anti bacterial additive in them called SteriTouch that kills bacteria. When it comes to being active, sweat and bacteria having something like SteriTouch is a very nice addition. The MX 686G is equipped with an inline mic, volume controls and a play/pause button. This makes listening to music and answering calls seamless while working out. The one downfall with the controls is the compatibility with all devices. SENNHEISER lists many popular brands of phones/tablets that it is compatible with but it seems geared more towards Android devices. If you have an iPhone you are somewhat limited to pause/play as the volume controls did not work on my iPhone 6.

One of the biggest features of the SENNHEISER MX 686G SPORT is the slide-to-fit mechanism which allows for a very snug fitting. I noticed the slide-to-fit to be most benefical when jogging or lifting heavy weights as the MX 686G stayed in place throughout the workout.

Sound quality, call quality and over all audio is a huge deal breaker when it comes to headphones. The SENNHEISER MX 686G SPORT more then does the job. You can pump the music nice and loud and it maintains a clear balanced sound. Bass was good while not overpowering everything else. Noise bleed was very minimal, even at higher volumes others around me didn’t hear much if anything at all. Vocals in some genres of music could have used a boost but overall the sound from the music was very good. When it comes to calls, the quality both inbound and outbound was fine. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that the quality was comparable to a smartphone headset because the MX 686G mic is much further away from the jaw. Wind noise and contact sound with the mic was heard on the other end of the calls but this is very hard to judge as conditions and moment will aways play a roll with a headset mic. It wasn’t any worse then a standard smartphone mic.

When comparing the SENNHEISER MX 686G SPORT with a standard smarphone headset you can really see the benefits. The build quality and durability are not even comparable as standard headsets have little to no protection from pulls, bends or water for that matter. The MX 686G has added protection in these areas which should allow these headsets to last a very long time. If your someone who works out, plays sports, is active or just is rough with headphones then the SENNHEISER MX 686G SPORT may just be worth a look.
